About AfraShe's Womin-Affirmative™ Approach
My eclectic approach is also rooted in Cultural Liberation Psychology, Afrikan, other Indigenous, non-Western, and Eastern Spirit-Mind-Body Psychologies, as well as Feminist Psychology ~ a post-modern psychological perspective which contends that the mental health and wellness of wimmin™ is apart and different from men, and therefore, cannot be effectively dealt with by applying standards of male-centered health to wimmin.
Further, it appreciates that a womin-affirmative™ approach is essential to bringing about authentic Self-Regard, happiness and lasting fulfillment. As well, my eclectic approach is also rooted in promoting cultural and ethnic diversity, inclusiveness and non-violence in our society.

My personal and professional style is one of being mindfully grounded, productively engaging and totally interactive. At the same time, I’m a good listener. While I’m non-judgmental, open-minded and often well humored; non-the-less, I'm not unconditional in my professional approach, which is a unique blend of down-to-earthness, respectfulness, proactive candidness.
And one where I will actively listen in order to find out what solutions might be best for you; and then we'll create a safe, confidential place where you and I can mutually explore, identify and resolve those problems that originally led you to contact me.
My goal is to help you achieve better life-balance by effectively transforming symptoms such as  depression, anxiety, shame, self-doubt, anger, lack of purpose, procrastination, loneliness, loss, disappointment, grief, self-sabotaging and self-defeating thoughts so that you can tap into a renewed sense of meaning and purpose and start to live a more self-encouraging, self-affirmative, inner-peaceful life. Or simply said to regain your natural peace of mind.

I have a dedicated interest in the ways in which societal, cultural and gender expectations negatively impact wimmin™ and how these environmental pressures to conform to an “enforced social norm” negatively affect our self-regard, identity, relationship and overall mental health.
My clinical training, diverse education, and life-long dedication as a stanch community activist, gender and diversity advocacy enable me to inherently understand and affirmatively support your unique diversity needs as essential to your individual pursuit of happiness.

Therefore, I'll also assist you to proactively recognize, understand and effectively address how most of your “seemingly” personal problems and conflicts can be viewed from a womin-affirmative
™ perspective. I work well with clients of all ages and lifestyle stages from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, sexual and gender orientations.
And I find that many of my clients demographically fall within two or more of a variety of gender, ethnic, cultural sexual-orientation, or other humin diversity and social justice groups, which typically means that their personal distress is also negatively affected by prolonged struggles for social/ cultural power and privilege equity.
 

The pursuit of happiness is enshrined in the Declaration of Independence as a right of every American, as well as on the self-improvement shelves of every American bookstore.

It is true that social/ cultural power and privilege can be used to protect our family and ourselves. Unfortunately, social status, power and privilege have often been misused to repudiate the rights, opportunities and privileges of those who are viewed as being outside of the dominant, acceptable social group. 
But it is more true that simply belonging to one or more of these "unaccepted" or marginalized groups can in itself, increase harmful environmental factors that create continual distress and negatively affect every aspect of one’s life , by systemically infringing on our inherent rights to our pursuit of happiness.  

Therefore, as part of our proactive and strengths-based assessment, you will be assisted to determine the extent to which your inclusion in one or more of these groups indicates that:

  • you'll also need to engage in an approach that will assist you to additionally identify ways in which your life is also being negatively affected by dominant societal barriers and obstacles;
  • and the role that these environmental social pressures may have in your current mind, body, spirit related problems and distresses. 

As a routine part of our womin-affirmative™ work together, I will offer opportunities for you to look at how day-to-day social situations may be creating underlying, often missed, obstacles to inherent wellbeing – within yourself and within your relationships with others – preventing you from recognizing and achieving a meaningful sense of your own innate inner-strength and self-resilience.

 

 At the same time, you'll find there's plenty of room for you to personally think about and determine your own individualized proactive plan . . .

However, during those times when you do come to find yourself in need of a little more professional insight or clarity than usual, it will be mindfully given, if need be.  

But do keep in mind that since this is your WellBalance™ ReShape™ SheChange™ Action Plan, that this also means that you are the one who will be determining which changes you are willing to make (as well as the degree and time frame in which you are willing to make any and all of those planned changes) in order to successfully bring an increased sense of SistahPeaceful WellBalance™ into your life . . .

I also affirm a timeless Afrikan and Indigenous World-View, whereby  life is seen as a uniquely mapped destiny path upon which, and according to our own unique life purpose [determined by a series auspicious and ominous aspects which result in an individual Mind-Body-Spirit Map™ of our Character Inner-Strengths & Self-Resilience] we will continually be engaged by the life lessons of our particular vibrational "lot" and Soul choice.

In other words, your unique Life Purpose Mind-Body-Spirit Map [MBSM] also points out a predetermined progression of proactive problem-solving [or life-lesson resolving] skills. Depending on your unique Character Inner-Strengths & Self-Resilience factors, your MBSM determines how you most  effectively manage life’s problems, stressors and life lessons, which help you to mature into a fully actualized, spiritually integrated and WellBalanced™ Being. 

Our unique process  . . . in which we mindfully identify and then proactively assist you to harmonically realign with your vibrational Life Purpose Mind-Body-Spirit Map™ . . . is aptly named WellBalance ReShaping™, in that it assists you to achieve vital health, spiritual growth and SistahPeaceful™ emotional WellBalance™.

 

Even under the best circumstances, adjusting to unexpected or unwanted life change and transitions can be overwhelming or exceed your usual ability to cope or adapt with common life transitions.

Emotional problems often occur as a result of our facing unexpected, simultaneous, or unremitting challenges or negative stressors without ample opportunity for rejuvenation, revitalization or recovery.

Such distressing experiences often result in bouts of clinical and non-clinical depression, anxiety, panic, self-blame, escapism and other serious relational or cognitive impairments that they seriously interfere with our day-to-day performance.

Common day-to-day life transition stressors can sometimes include relationship problems at home and work, inability to cope with common milestone transitions, such as college, relocating, expected or unexpected career changes, relationship loss, births, accidents, trauma, financial or legal problems, life orientation changes, illness, aging, deaths, etc.
